What should the NCAA do?

This post is based on several thoughts that I have had about the NCAA. It will jump around. Click to see more.

  1. The NCAA should allow its student- athletes to generate money for themselves. I am not saying that the NCAA should pay its athletes. I believe that certain laws would force the schools to pay all of their athletes equally regardless of sport and I do not think that that is affordable. However major stars and players on major teams are surrounded by people who want to give them money. They can charge for autographs, sign endorsement deals, enter into "internships", and etc. If certain athletes do not have people interested in paying them, the schools is not at fault.
  2. Then the NCAA needs to pass a rule that states that if a school or its leadership either commits or coverups crimes involving athletes, coaches, trainers, and all other members of the athletic department and the school leadership, it is a major NCAA violation and that school is subject to penalties up to the death penalty. See Penn State, Baylor, Michigan State.
  3. In Football, fix the FBS playoff. There are two choices
    1. Pass a rule that only conference champions can receive a bid. or
    2. Increase the size of the playoff to eight teams while granting automatic bids to power five conference champions. The highest ranked non power five champion should receive a bid with two wildcard bids for best non champions.
  4. In Basketball, get rid of the men's NIT. The NCAA should expand the tournament to 96. The conference regular season champions should receive bids. If a conference season champion and tournament champion is the same, the tournament runner up gets a bid.
