Only slightly worse than the current system |
In a past post, I suggested that the NCAA should expand the college football playoff to eight teams with the power five champions each getting a bid, the best group of five champion getting a bid with two wildcards. I think that my earlier idea would be a good idea, if the NCAA acutally had enough power and guts to try it but it likely will not happen. Truth be told, I don't want it to happen. The reason why I oppose it is because it is another stopgap. It appeases the power conferences who are the problem. So I have decided to share a true plan to fix the playoff.
- The group of five must work with the NCAA and form there own playoff.
- This playoff should be flexible because the NCAA should invite power five champions who do not get into the other playoff.
- Best independent team is also invited
- The NCAA should move a certain number bowl games based on the size of the playoff to a later date. Later on once the power five champions are in use the major bowl games.
- The first round should be in early December to allow for losers to play in bowl games, that way traditions can continue.
- It should be a tournament of champions, only, so that the regular season matters.
- Conferences get an share based on where their champion finished.
- Use the greed of the power five against it, they used to be the power six.
- The SEC uses a best team argument which is highly subjective. Point this out to the other power five conference presidents when their champions are not invited. Remind them that the best team is really decided on the field.
- The power five seek not only to make more money but to horde it denying other conferences big paydays. Argue that in this system everybody will get a lot of money.
- Be prepared to wait, the power five are making a lot of money, however between conference realignment which broke up rivals, football ticking off the other sports on campus and the power five contempt for group of five champions they are alienating the fans.
- One day there will be a backlash. On that day, a true playoff will be created when the power five join.
My previous idea
